canine sketches

Working on a new canine creature, a mixture of african wild dog, oarfish, and sarcastic fringehead. (I'll let you guys figure out what that means.) Just a few quick sketches to try and figure out the design.

About Me

Katie Feldman
San Francisco, CA, United States
I'm a concept artist whose focus is character and creature design. I was born in California, but grew up in a small town on the East Coast. I spent much of my childhood running barefoot through the forest catching frogs. I have never lost my love of nature, and gained an interest in natural biology and nomenclature among many other things. I'm always on the lookout for fascinating tidbits of information; I'm a font of practically useless but entertaining facts. Gathering and recombining information in creative ways is a skill I apply to all my hobbies and activities. In college I studied Psychology and East Asian Studies (I studied Japanese and spent a year abroad in Japan.) and I was able to work closely with a Japanese woodblock print artist. I'm also a huge Shakespeare nerd, which feeds my abiding love for words and literature. I always enjoy a good film, my favorite movies range from Die Hard to Ken Branagh's Hamlet to Oldboy. But for all my time spent drawing in front of a computer, give me a good book and a sunny patch of grass and I'll be happy.

Dark Waters

For my "Dark Waters" project I am designing two related ecosystems. The first is a terrestrial environment protected by a huge dome that has sunk to the bottom of the ocean. This is a self-contained environment that has been evolving virtually in a vacuum for many thousands of years. Many of the creatures living inside the dome survived, and have over the generations created a highly specific and tightly woven ecosystem.
